Discover Nazaré
Nazaré is three villages stacked on top of each other: Praia, down on the sand, with its striped tents and seafood restaurants; Sítio, on the clifftop, reached by a funicular built in 1889 that climbs the rock in three minutes to the Suberco viewpoint and the twelfth-century sanctuary that has drawn pilgrims here for eight hundred years; and Pederneira, the oldest and quietest of the three, with its own view back across the bay. What made this fishing village famous is out of sight — a submarine canyon running some 230 kilometres into the Atlantic and dropping more than four kilometres deep, funnelling swell straight onto Praia do Norte and producing, from October to March, the biggest surfable waves in the world, watched from the São Miguel Arcanjo lighthouse. Come in summer and the same beach is simply one of the best on the Portuguese coast, with fish still drying on wooden racks in the open air.
